Euan Mutch tells his story of recovery from addiction, how he’s using his experience and new knowledge to help other people in recovery, and shares some of the outcomes of his work as a fitness instructor in this field.
I know addiction. I’ve lived it. Alcohol, opioids, stimulants – I’ve been through the chaos, the rehabs and the hospital beds. I’ve walked into the rooms of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and NA (Narcotics Anonymous), sat down and listened. The 12 Steps became part of my survival, guiding me through some of my darkest moments and teaching me accountability, honesty and faith in change.
I’ve also known the unbearable pain of losing my best friend and brother, Ally Menzies. His loss left a hole in my life that can never be filled, but everything I do now – every client I help, every class I run, every person I support through recovery – is done to honour his memory. Ally always told me I was the best personal trainer he knew, and today I finally believe him. His words and his spirit drive me to keep going.
For a long time, I was asleep to life. Now I am fully awake – alcohol-free, building something bigger than myself and using my story to save others.
That’s why completing the FitPro Specialist Training in Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery was such a powerful step for me. This course didn’t just give me theory – it gave me structure, insight and a way to combine my lived experience with professional practice. It opened my eyes to new ways of applying fitness and coaching to recovery.
I want to thank Teresa (who leads FitPro) and Aislinn (sub-editor and writer) for giving me the chance to share my story, and Nicole Golden (the course creator) for developing such a revolutionary course. Their vision has given me the tools to integrate my passion, my story and my qualifications into something that is already transforming lives.
I also want to honour the other brave people on the course. Their honesty, their openness and their willingness to share difficult truths reminded me that recovery is never a solo journey. Just as the 12 Steps teach us, community and accountability are essential – we do this together, one day at a time.
My approach
I design safe, adaptable training programmes that take into account the different impacts of substances:
- Opioids – focusing on joint-friendly, low-impact training.
- Stimulants – balancing the nervous system with sustainable intensity.
- Alcohol – rehydration, nutrition and functional strength to rebuild the body.
But this work goes far deeper than training the body. It’s about mindsets. It’s about taking the addiction out of the substance and redirecting it into growth, discipline and self-belief.
Through my work – outdoor bootcamps, Brotherhood groups, football coaching and one-to-one sessions – I see every day how movement, structure and belief can change lives. I train the kids outside in any weather, creating a community of like-minded guys I call The Brotherhood. Week by week, I watch them change – not just physically but mentally – growing in discipline, confidence and self-respect. They are boys becoming men and it inspires me every time.
I am proud to say: New Mindset, New Power is more than a slogan. It is a lifeline.
Recovery through fitness – testimonials
Since completing my FitPro Specialist Training in Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery, I’ve been able to combine my lived experience with professional knowledge. These stories prove that recovery isn’t only about overcoming drugs or alcohol – it’s also about rebuilding self-esteem, mental health and belief in yourself. Whether addiction, trauma or confidence issues, fitness and mindset work provide the structure to change lives.
Aaron Stewart: “The advice, training and support from Euan through fitness has been truly life-changing for me over the last year. He’s transformed my outlook on life and helped me become the man I’ve always wanted to be. I can’t thank him enough.”
Lewis Akinlami: “I met Euan 10 weeks ago at 4:45 in the morning and from that first session he completely blew my head wide open. He helped me let go of my dark past and totally changed me. Now I’m super happy, confident and extremely fit again – just like I was a few years ago. Training under his guidance has been nothing short of life-changing.”
Stuart Scott: “I suffered with confidence issues and PTSD after losing a close family member. I had no drive and very low self-esteem. Coach Euan got my fitness training in order, but more importantly he helped shift my mindset. Through his training methods he pushed me beyond my comfort zone and now those issues are a distant memory. I wake up with a smile and get on with life. Thanks to New Mindset, New Power.”
Brian Quinn: “So here goes my story and the path Euan Mutch has taken me on. I went through an extremely bad break-up, lost everything and even ended up in prison. When I came out, Euan took me under his wing. He focused first on helping me mentally and got me to the place in my head that he promised he would… I only train once a week on a Friday morning, but the way Euan trains us and talks us through those sessions is truly inspirational. I’m now looking forward to kicking on again and building from here.”
Antonio Gordon: “I love myself. This is something I never thought I’d be able to say – at least not wholeheartedly. Just eight months ago, I hit rock bottom. My spirit was crushed by depression, low self-esteem and suicidal thoughts. At 20 years old, I had given up on myself and on life. Then I met someone – a man I now call my hero: Euan Mutch. He helped me find the strength to love myself again. He gave me the will to succeed, to grow and to fight to become the best version of me.”
Jonny: “I’ve been working with Euan for just three months and in that short time my mindset has totally changed. I’ve grown into the man I always wanted to be and my body has transformed alongside it. Training with Euan has also given me the courage to start my own business – I will never look back and I can never thank him enough. He has created an army of guys living life to their true potential.”
Final thoughts
This blog is not just my story – it’s the story of everyone I’ve trained, supported and walked alongside in recovery. The FitPro Specialist Addiction & Recovery course gave me the professional foundation. My lived experience in AA, NA and the 12 Steps gave me the understanding. And fitness gave me the tool to help others change their lives.
I owe thanks to my sponsor Ged Fraser, who saved me from oblivion. To my best friend and brother Ally Menzies, who I sadly lost – everything I do now is to honour his memory. And to every single client who has trusted me with their journey.
For anyone considering their CPD pathway, I can honestly say this course is life-changing – both personally and professionally. It has given me not just knowledge, but purpose.
This is only the beginning. Recovery is possible. New Mindset, New Power – we don’t stop.
