Specialist Pilates Adaptations: SpineSafe, Pregnancy and Chair-Based Practice with Cherry Baker

Course Description

In this recorded learning experience with Cherry Baker, Pilates teachers will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to safely adapt mainstream Pilates classes for clients with spinal conditions, pregnancy and reduced mobility. Participants will explore practical exercise adaptations, progressions and teaching strategies that promote inclusion while maintaining challenge and engagement for all class members.

The course covers safe and effective modifications for clients with spinal conditions such as spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, disc bulges and osteoporosis, alongside key health and safety considerations, movement confidence strategies and condition-specific cueing. Participants will also learn how to adapt Pilates exercises for pregnant clients within a mainstream class setting, with an understanding of relevant safety, legal and insurance considerations.

In addition, the workshop introduces the use of a dining chair as a versatile teaching tool to expand exercise repertoire, provide seated and standing alternatives and support clients who may have difficulty getting to and from the floor. Chair-based variations can be incorporated into both face-to-face and online classes, offering greater accessibility while adding variety and challenge for mainstream participants.

Cherry Baker has been working in the field of fitness for more than 37 years. For the past 20 of these years, she has worked in rehabilitation, getting clients moving again. Cherry hopes to share her experiences from a fitness professional’s point of view. Many clients can’t afford one-to-one or to continue with physiotherapy once they start to recover, so this workshop will be useful, not only for one-to-one clients but in class situations when you can adapt or modify moves to suit a client’s recovery.
