Motor insurance: What you need to know
Motor insurance is a legal requirement for all UK drivers, but it’s also your financial safety net should you find yourself in an accident (not to mention failing to have valid insurance can result in a hefty fine as well as penalty points added to your license).
But what does it do and what does it cover? Well, that depends…
There are three types of cover to choose from, including:
Comprehensive
- Comprehensive cover is the highest level of motor insurance you can purchase, meaning you’ll typically receive cover for a wider range of risks, such as damage to your car, personal belongings and windscreen
Third-party, fire and theft
- Third-party, fire and theft covers you financially should your vehicle be stolen or damaged in a fire. You’re also covered for damage caused to other people, their vehicles and/or their property.
Third-party only
- Third-party cover is the minimum legal requirement for motor insurance. You can only claim on this type of insurance for injuries and damage to another person, their vehicle or their property from a car accident.
What information do we need?
To provide you with an accurate quote, we’ll need some information about you and your vehicle.
Your car and how it’s used
We need to collect information such as the age of your vehicle, its make and model, how long you’ve owned it and how far you drive each year. We’ll also ask about how you use your car, e.g. is it primarily for work or personal use? And do you park it on your driveway at night or on the road?
Details about you
Finding out more about you is also an essential part of our quoting process. We need to know how old you are, where you live, the type of industry you work in and how long you’ve been driving. And, if you want to add additional drivers to your policy, we’ll need you to provide the same information about them as well.
Your driving history
We also need you to tell us about your driving history before we can provide you with a quote. For example, we’ll ask you about your no claims discount (if you have one) and whether you’ve been involved in any accidents.
How to reduce the cost of motor insurance
The cost of your motor insurance depends on a range of factors, including your personal details, the vehicle you drive, your driving history and which provider you choose. Here are some tips to help reduce your insurance premiums:
Shop around:
Motor insurance policies don’t all cost the same amount, so checking out multiple providers could help you cut down your premiums (that’s where we come in!).
Opt for annual payments:
Annual payments usually work out cheaper than monthly payments in the long run. So, if you can afford it, consider paying upfront.
Consider a smaller car:
Typically, the more powerful the car, the more you’ll pay in insurance. Cars are split into insurance groups ranging from 1 to 50 (group 1 being the cheapest). So, to reduce costs, look for a car in group 1.
Increase your voluntary excess:
Choosing a higher excess option can drastically reduce your premium costs. However, be careful not to increase your voluntary excess to the point that it becomes unaffordable.

Motor Insurance FAQs
How long do quotes last?
Prices are only valid at the time you are quoted as insurers can change their prices at any time. If you leave your journey and return, we cannot guarantee that the price will be the same.
Can I add another driver to my policy after I’ve purchased it?
Many providers will let you add a new driver to your policy later. However, the terms around this process will differ from provider to provider, and some providers might charge a fee if you wish to make changes to your policy.
What factors impact the cost of my motor insurance?
There are a number of factors that can make your motor insurance more or less expensive, including:
- Your age
- How long you’ve been driving
- The vehicle you own
- Your driving history
- Your annual mileage
Do I still need insurance if my car is off-road?
No, you don’t need to insure your vehicle if it’s off-road i.e. it remains in a private driveway or garage. However, you do need a valid Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN).
What impacts my no-claims bonus?
Unless you have chosen to protect your no-claims discount (allowing you to keep it even when making a claim), making a claim on your insurance policy will generally impact your no-claims discount. However, making just one claim doesn’t always mean you’ll lose your entire discount.
How do I estimate my annual mileage?
Here’s a five-step process to estimate your annual mileage:
- Figure out the distance you travel to and from work each day
- Estimate the distance you travel for weekly shopping, social outings and further afield trips (such as staycations).
- Add these figures together
- Multiply this number by 52
- Add a small amount of contingency to this number
Can I cancel my motor insurance policy?
Yes, you can cancel your policy. Motor insurance policies are legally required to offer a cooling-off period that gives you the right to cancel your policy for any reason within the first 14 days after purchase. However, the terms for cancelling your insurance can differ depending on your provider and some will charge cancellation fees, so make sure to read the policy wording carefully before making a purchase.
Why is motor insurance compulsory?
Motor insurance laws in the UK state that your vehicle must have valid insurance to be driven on the road or in public places. The laws protect drivers financially if an accident happens and a claim is made. Without it, you would be responsible for the financial ramifications (which could cost you thousands) and you would be breaking the law by not having the minimum level of car insurance.

Testimonials
Bella Bremner
Thank you for your very helpful and personal service with my professional insurance. It felt like the old days when one would talk to a professional insurance broker rather than today's call centres with people reading by rote from a script: “Computer says …”
Pilates Instructor
Stu Gatherum
FitPro stepped up for their trainers during the pandemic. Every step of the way, with every permutation of the rules and guidelines we received an email update of what the rules meant for PTs and their businesses. They spelled out exactly what fitness professionals were allowed to do, what they weren’t allowed to do, and what the guidelines meant for us. This is just one of the reasons I always recommend graduates from our Personal Training courses to go to FitPro when they qualify with us. I’m so impressed with the service.
