Well, it stands for \u2018physical activity readiness questionnaire\u2019 and it\u2019s the form fitness professionals use to identify health and lifestyle considerations in clients before starting them on a fitness or exercise programme.<\/p>\n<p>If any risk factors have been identified on the PAR-Q form, the participant should go and chat to their GP for consent prior to starting an exercise programme.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important for clients to complete the PAR-Q before participating in the session. If the client has a heart condition or experiences tightness in the chest, they\u2019ll need approval from their GP before starting an exercise programme. They ask about heart conditions, chest pain, dizziness and balance, joint problems, medication, blood pressure and any other reasons your client feels they shouldn\u2019t be exercising.<\/p>\n<p>If working with individuals with specialist conditions, it may be necessary to obtain further information from the client. The same principle applies (i.e., you\u2019ll need to assess the suitability of the activity, adapt the exercise or refer accordingly).<\/p>\n<p>By answering \u2018Yes\u2019 to any of these questions, the client will be able to see whether they require approval from their GP before starting an exercise programme. It\u2019s a case of working out whether it\u2019s safe for your client to go ahead without their GP\u2019s approval.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>How do I analyse a PAR-Q?<\/h3>\n<p>The PAR-Q is not a health examination \u2013 that should be carried out by a medical professional \u2013 but it IS an essential first step to identifying risks with new clients and, in turn, preventing a health issue or injury from occurring while on your watch.<\/p>\n<p>It can identify pre-existing medical conditions or other important factors which may impact on participation that could be aggravated by physical exercise. By going through the questions on the PAR-Q form, the participant will know if they need to get approval from their GP before starting an exercise programme.<\/p>\n<p>You should continue to pre-screen participants before each session for other medical conditions, injuries, illness or factors which may impact on participation (such as pregnancy) to make sure there are no changes to health since the original PAR-Q was completed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Why the PAR-Q is an important consideration<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So don\u2019t forget, before starting any programme or fitness class, your client should complete a PAR-Q.
