According to a study carried out by the University of New South Wales (UNSW), mass is actually breathed out as carbon dioxide.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor <strong>Andrew Brown<\/strong>, head of the UNSW School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, said, \u201cThere is surprising ignorance and confusion about the metabolic process of weight loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the study, the big misconception among personal trainers, dietitians and doctors is that \u2018missing mass\u2019 has been converted into energy or heat. More than 50% of the 150 doctors, dietitians and personal trainers surveyed were said to hold this belief.<\/p>\n<p>In the paper, published in <em>British Medical Journal<\/em>, the authors show that losing 10kg of fat requires 29kg of oxygen to be inhaled and that this metabolic process produces 28kg of carbon dioxide and 11kg of water.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lead author of the study Ruben Meerman explained, \u201cI lost 15kg in 2013 and simply wanted to know where those kg were going.\u201d With the opinion that this topic is \u201cbadly taught\u201d, the professor was keen to straighten out the speculation, especially in light of the worldwide obesity crisis that doesn\u2019t appear to be declining with any speed or momentum.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>FitPro\u00a0wished to find out more about the complexities of mass breathed out as carbon dioxide.<strong> Meerman<\/strong> said, \u201cBoth calorie restriction and exercise can tip the balance in your favour if the objective is weight loss. The \u2018calories in\/calories out\u2019 mantra is still correct. If your body needs more calories than you supply in the diet, you will start to access calories you have stored as fat.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1230\" style=\"width: 342px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1230\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1230\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fitpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Ruben-Meerman-Bio-Image.jpeg\" alt=\"Ruben Meerman\" width=\"332\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ruben Meerman<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>He added, \u201cTo access the excess energy stored in body fat, the fat molecules must be liberated from their fat cells and ultimately broken down and converted to carbon dioxide and water. The atoms in those fat molecules don\u2019t just turn into pure energy or heat and then cease to exist but that is what the majority of doctors, dietitians and personal trainers (fitness instructors) said they believed is what happens in our survey.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5>Delving deeper into the science, the professor concluded, \u201cThe chemical formula for an average human fat molecule has been known for a long time and the precise numbers have been available since 1960. It is:\u00a0<strong>C\u2085\u2085H\u2081\u2080\u2084O\u2086.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>\u201cSo every molecule of fat, on average, has 55 carbon atoms, 104 hydrogens and six oxygens, whereas carbon dioxide has just one carbon atom per molecule (i.e., CO\u2082).\u00a0The carbon dioxide produced carries away all the carbon atoms when a fat molecule is fully metabolised and water carries away all 104 hydrogen atoms. The complete formula for the metabolism of fat is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>C\u2085\u2085H\u2081\u2080\u2084O\u2086 + 78 O\u2082 \u2192 55 CO\u2082 + 52 H\u2082O<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could call that formula above \u2018the weight loss formula\u2019. It shows that you have to inhale 78 oxygen molecules to \u2018burn\u2019 a single fat molecule. Using high school chemistry, you can then calculate that if you want to lose 10kg of fat <strong>(C\u2085\u2085H\u2081\u2080\u2084O\u2086)<\/strong>, you\u2019ll have to inhale 29kg of oxygen and you\u2019ll produce 28kg of carbon dioxide which you\u2019ll exhale\u00a0and 11kg of water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I wanted to know is, of those 10kg of fat, how much leaves your body as carbon dioxide? In other words, what fraction of the 28kg total comes from the fat and what comes from the inhaled oxygen? The answer is not obvious from \u2018the weight loss formula\u2019 and figuring it out is what got us published in the BMJ.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1280 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fitpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/wEIGHT-LOSS-2..jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"434\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy reading some very old biochemistry from 1949, I showed that four out of the six oxygen atoms in a fat molecule will end up in carbon dioxide molecules and the remaining two end up in water.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNow, you can either eat less or move more or some combination of the two but as long as you are eating less than your body needs then you will lose weight. There is an infinite number of combinations that can have this result, just as there is an infinite number of ways you can add two numbers to get 100 (e.g., 20 + 80 or 33 + 67 or 40.7 + 59.3 etc.).
