Set your fitness classes alight with epic Club Bangers

FitPro’s resident music producer DJ ‘Nine Mile’ Decks (aka Dexter Jeffrey) is the mastermind behind Club Bangers, a series jammed with epic club tunes to light up your fitness classes. We chat to Dex ahead of the launch of Club Bangers Volume 14.

FitPro: DJ Decks, why has the Club Bangers series been so popular do you think?

DJ ‘Nine Mile’ Decks: Club Bangers works so well and is popular as it caters for every type of fitness class. Presenters and instructors teach with its fresh and uplifting music – every track is a ‘banger’. Also, there are many different BPM ranges, so there is a Club Bangers out there for EVERYONE!

FP: What was your goal when you started creating the series?

DJ D: I think for a while now MyGroupFit has needed something to give it an identity, just like Virgin Records created with its Now That’s What I Call Music brand. I’ve wanted to do that too by creating a brand where, when anyone sees or hears of it, they straight away think of MyGroupFit and FitPro. You know it’s pure quality and that any release is a ‘must have’, even before you’ve listened to any titles prior to downloading them!

FP: How do you choose the particular ‘bangers’ you include? How do you know those particular songs are going to work well together?

DJ D: I am lucky as, being a producer/DJ, I get to ‘network’ with many other producers and DJs and I have access to lots of promotional music from various labels and independent artists. I go through and listen to lots of music daily and I can pick out gems I know will work on any particular Club Bangers I am putting together. After DJing for several decades now, along with studying for the RSA Exercise to Music qualification earlier on in my music/fitness career, I know what does and doesn’t work, both on the dancefloor and in a fitness class situation.

FP: What goes into creating each Club Bangers?

DJ D: A lot of hard work! Haha! Seriously though, it is challenging but also fun at the same time. Putting the songs together, mixing them around to get them in the right order and making sure they are in keys that modulate to get ‘brighter’ sounds as the whole mix builds from start to finish is all essential for a successful fitness music compilation album in my humble opinion. Everyone has their style of doing this but my approach is from both a DJ/music producer angle and a classically trained music background. My university education comes into play, as a solid grasp of music theory is, I’d say, essential to create these mixes in the format and way I create them.

FP: Do you have a favourite title from the series? If so, which one and why?

DJ D: I love them all – but I would say that, right?! But, yeah, I do have some personal favourites. I would say to anyone reading this to make sure you have these five Club Bangers downloaded: 1, 3, 5, 9 and 13. They are my personal favourites. They cover all the different BPM ranges (128,130,132,135, 138 right the way up to 150 BPM) and they also cover different vibes, from commercial club mixes to high-energy club hits, even to underground smash hits! Take it from me, there are no better titles for your fitness classes than those five I’ve mentioned above. There’s only a tissue paper between those and the rest, so trust me when I tell you they are all brilliant! Think of the Club Bangers brand like Pokémon, where “you gotta catch them all!”

FP: Being a renowned London DJ, what do you see on the dancefloor that might influence your choices for what might work in a studio?

DJ D: Funny you should ask, as this year marks a quarter of a century DJing at the mighty Infernos in Clapham, where I make sure the dancefloor is always pumping. What I notice and look for is the crowd noise, the cheers, the gasps when you play a particular song and then whether they sing along (in some cases, the singing is louder than the song I’m playing!). Then you know that songs hits the mark. It’s songs like that where they just ‘pop’ on the dancefloor – 90% of the time they would transfer to a fitness class situation and be successful on a fitness music album too.

I say 90%, as there are some absolute bangers on the dancefloor of a night club that wouldn’t work on a fitness music compilation for a fitness class (for example, the Grease and Abba mega mix goes down great at Infernos but would be a car crash if placed on a fitness music album in that original mega mix format! Same goes for Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline. Great for the dancefloor but not so great for the fitness class!

DJ Nine Miles Decks AKA Dexter Jeffrey at London’s Infernos

FP: How long does it take to pull something like this together? We know it’s not just a matter of pulling out your fave tracks!

DJ D: From start to finish, it could vary time wise. So, from listening to songs to compiling a first draft playlist, to then doing changes (taking songs out and/or swapping the order around), to mastering up all the tracks to use, to mixing and preparing all the final audio files for the MGF website can take around two to four weeks. The four-week range would be for a title that is a bit more complicated in putting together and/or because I am waiting on a licence/publishing details for the song to give me permission from the artist or label to use it, as all these additional factors I have to think about when putting titles together (the legality side of things!).

FP: Can you give us three words to describe the feeling an instructor gets when they teach to Club Bangers?

DJ D: 1. Satisfaction – The knowledge that every track used has passed my tests to be on an album. Each track would have been tested thoroughly for its vibe and energy, along with its track positioning too on any particular Club Bangers album. Also, you have that satisfaction that the BPM for each Club Bangers album is perfectly tailored for your classes.

Empowered– The fact you as a presenter/instructor are using the best music on the market to date. You and your class participants will enjoy your class and the workout with no complaints musically!

Anticipation– As each Club Bangers release will always leave you and your classes feeling fulfilled, you will also be left feeling excited for the next release!

FP: As a producer, you know you have to appeal to the instructors as well as the clients (with the instructor being the one choosing the music). So how do you manage to move the whole room at the same time?

DJ D: With this question, it really does help being a DJ on the DJing circuit. I am able to take requests at the club and talk with club goers each weekend and online too. This way I get to know their mindset and their music preferences, as many club goers go to fitness classes too. So again, with my background and knowledge about teaching a fitness class AND a deeper knowledge into clients, bouncing musical ideas off each other is something that is great for me, the Club Bangers brand and MyGroupFit as a whole!

Dexter Jeffrey in his studio

FP: And finally, what have you got in the pipeline for Club Bangers?

DJ D: I’ve loads in the pipeline for this new Club Bangers brand for MyGroupFit. There’s a new Club Bangers Volume 14 coming out very soon. It’s set at 128 BPM and is perfect for step and body conditioning. It has a similar vibe to one of the previous bestsellers (Club Bangers Volume 1) as, like that title, it features familiar artists and groups.

Club Bangers Volume 14 is full of great tracks from household names including Olivia Dean, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Raye and Arianna Grande, plus much, much more! There will also be a new Club Bangers featuring brilliant, soulful house bangers and a 90’s remix bangers title too among other Club Bangers releases down the line, so look out for those titles coming to MyGroupFit soon!

Head over to MyGroupFit now to check out the Club Bangers series and bring some fresh energy to your classes!

Read more about what goes into producing MyGroupFit albums in this FitPro blog post

FitPro’s resident music producer DJ ‘Nine Mile’ Decks (aka Dexter Jeffrey) is the mastermind behind…

[23

0":"post-14026","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-group-exercise
