Dr Linia Patel explores menstrual cycle nutrition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Should your menstrual cycle inform what you eat? Dr Linia Patel\u00a0<strong>(PhD), RD explores what menstrual cycle nutrition <\/strong>means for female athletes and everyday performance.<\/h2>\n<p>Recently, I had the privilege of speaking at the WHX Thrive Performance Nutrition in an African Context conference \u2013 the first of its kind, and wow, was it time well spent! One of my favourite sessions was a debate between two brilliant sports medicine doctors \u2013 Dr Phatho Zondi and <strong>Dr Nicola Frietas. <\/strong>It was exactly how science\u00a0<em>should<\/em>\u00a0be shared: interpreted, debated and translated \u2013 not reduced to a catchy social media soundbite. The debate format made it easy to see both sides of the argument. So, in this blog, I\u2019m going to do my best to do the same for you.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The data gap: Why women are still understudied<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the elephant in the room: women are still significantly under-represented in research. Across more than 5,200 papers published in six leading sports science journals between 2014 and 2020, only\u00a0one third of participants were female and just\u00a06% of studies were conducted exclusively on women. The result? A science gap that means women are understudied, under-represented and often undertreated. The reality is that findings from male-based research may not always apply to women. The good news is that this is changing \u2013 slowly. Researchers are pushing to close this gap, but yes, fluctuating hormones make studying women complex.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The physiology: Why hormones matter<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The major difference between male and female physiology comes down to hormones \u2013 and the menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle typically spans\u00a021\u201335 days, starting from the first day of bleeding, until menopause. It\u2019s commonly split into two phases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Follicular phase<\/strong>\u00a0(Day 1 of bleeding \u2192 ovulation)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Luteal phase<\/strong>\u00a0(Ovulation \u2192 next period)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But within these phases, the hormonal landscape changes dramatically:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Early follicular<\/strong>: low oestrogen, low progesterone<\/li>\n<li><strong>Late follicular<\/strong>: high oestrogen, low progesterone<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ovulation<\/strong>: moderate oestrogen, low progesterone<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mid-luteal<\/strong>: moderate oestrogen, high progesterone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These hormones influence appetite, energy needs and metabolism. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oestrogen may suppress appetite.<\/li>\n<li>Progesterone may increase it (hello, pre-period cravings!).<\/li>\n<li>Energy requirements may be slightly higher in the luteal phase.<\/li>\n<li>Fuel use shifts \u2013 with carbohydrate and fat metabolism varying across the cycle.<\/li>\n<li>The luteal phase may be more catabolic (less favourable for muscle building).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>In some nutrition circles, there\u2019s a popular piece of advice that says during the first half of your cycle you can push harder in training and get by on fewer calories, while in the second half you should increase your intake, prioritise recovery (especially fuelling soon after exercise) and stay on top of your protein.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>The case\u00a0<em>for<\/em>\u00a0eating with your cycle<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Here\u2019s why some argue tailoring your nutrition to your cycle makes sense:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Symptoms are real.<\/strong>\u00a0Between 60\u201393% of female athletes report menstrual symptoms such as mood changes (90.6%), fatigue (86.2%) and cramps (84.2%). Around 65% say their cycle directly affects performance. These symptoms impact training, recovery and nutrition \u2013 and they can\u2019t be ignored.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biology supports it.<\/strong>\u00a0Mechanistically, different phases of the cycle do change hormone levels, energy needs and, potentially, fuel use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Small changes matter in sport.<\/strong>\u00a0Even if average research findings suggest no major impact, the \u2018outliers\u2019 (those who respond differently) get lost in the data. In elite performance, where 1% matters, even small differences are important.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>The case\u00a0<em>against<\/em>: Why it may not make a difference<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Now for the other side:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Big studies don\u2019t show meaningful differences.<\/strong>\u00a0Meta-analyses (one big study by combining the results of lots of smaller studies on the same topic) suggest effects are small, inconsistent and often riddled with methodological challenges.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tracking isn\u2019t perfect.<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s difficult to know exactly when ovulation happens, even with apps. Ovulation kits are more accurate but not very practical for large-scale studies or everyday use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Big rocks first.<\/strong>\u00a0When you focus too much on \u2018eating for your cycle\u2019, you risk losing sight of the fundamentals: consistent fuelling, progression and recovery. Limiting yourself to \u2018only going hard\u2019 two weeks of the month could actually hold you back.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Team sport reality check.<\/strong> How does a coach tailor training and menstrual cycle nutrition for 20 players, each in different phases of their cycle, when match day isn\u2019t cycle-dependent?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Smarter alternative.<\/strong>\u00a0Building self-awareness and tracking\u00a0<em>your own<\/em> symptoms may be a more powerful and practical strategy than prescriptive cycle-based eating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>The food for thought<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To be honest, when the conversation in this space first started, I was\u00a0<em>super excited<\/em>. As a performance nutritionist working mainly with women, the idea of moving towards more\u00a0<strong>personalised nutrition<\/strong>\u00a0felt like a breakthrough. Mechanistically, the biology is fascinating \u2013 hormones\u00a0<em>do<\/em>\u00a0shift and it makes sense that nutrition might need to shift with them.<\/p>\n<p>But when I put my\u00a0<strong>evidence-based hat<\/strong>\u00a0on, the reality is this: the science just doesn\u2019t stack up (yet) to justify broad, generalised prescriptions for women based purely on menstrual cycle phase.<\/p>\n<p>So, where does that leave us?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Research findings conflict \u2013 partly because methodology varies so much.<\/li>\n<li>Every woman experiences her cycle differently. PMS, PMDD, appetite, mood and fatigue can range from subtle to overwhelming.<\/li>\n<li>Increases in daily energy needs from the follicular to luteal phase vary widely in the literature \u2013 anywhere from <strong>90 to 500kcal\/day<\/strong>. Most studies suggest around\u00a0<strong>200-350kcal\/day<\/strong> but some show no change at all.<\/li>\n<li>The lack of universal patterns means a personalised approach is best.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>The bottom line<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Here\u2019s what we know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women deserve better science \u2013 and we need more high-quality research that actually studies women.<\/li>\n<li>Lack of evidence isn\u2019t the same as\u00a0<em>no<\/em><\/li>\n<li>For now, the strongest performance principles still stand: train smart, fuel well, recover properly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And, most importantly,\u00a0<strong>you are an individual.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Know yourself. Track your symptoms. Notice patterns.
