The largest ever National Fitness Day took place this week, with more than a million people moving at more than 20,000 free events and activities, making it the most active day of the year. A ukactive incentive, National Fitness Day encourages the nation to celebrate the fun of fitness and physical activity across the UK.

Founded in 2011 by The énergie Group, National Fitness Day was gifted to ukactive in 2014 and has continued to grow from year to year. Steven Ward, CEO of ukactive, said: “National Fitness Day is a fantastic chance to spotlight physical activity and the role it plays in creating a healthier nation. It’s great that these 20,000 free events across the country were able to get people to experience the fun of fitness and carry forward healthy habits.”

To celebrate the event, FitPro teamed up with Volair Leisure, a club that provides a range of health and fitness facilities for residents in Knowsley, Liverpool. All activities were free for members and guests, including use of the gym and swimming pool.

MOSSA’s ViPR Workout proved to be a big draw and was well received by participants of all ages and abilities. FitPro national trainer, Aaron Barnett, delivered the ViPR Workout to the over 50s group, focusing on low-impact vitality and reconditioning movements that help people to regain movement quality, energy and strength. Throughout the session, participants switched the weight from 2kg to 4kg to suit their personal goals.

Trainer Dee, a Volair member in her 60s, said: “I’ve just done my first ViPR Workout session. As you can see, I’m no teenager but I really enjoyed myself and I’d love to do it again!” Another participant mentioned that she enjoyed the variety of the ViPR Workout class, calling it “a change from other types of classes we do – a good all-round exercise for everything, so it’s really fantastic.”

Ten of the day care members and their helpers, who are based at the centre, then joined trainer Aaron in a fun session focused on balance and movement, which perfectly utilised FitPro’s newly launched 2kg ViPR™. Fitness instructors from all Volair Leisure sites also joined in throughout the day, and it would seem the Volair team works out anywhere as staff performed a ViPR session outdoors and then cleared the tables and chairs to work out in the reception area!

Volair’s members are already huge fans of the MOSSA Group Power programme, and the club’s health and fitness manager, Lynn Wilson, delivered an invigorating Group Fight class. Regulars who attended all of MOSSA’s sessions at The International Fitness Showcase once again owned the front row, and even Volair’s receptionist could be seen arm punching the air in time to the music. Energy levels didn’t appear to dwindle as the evening finished with a fun dance session in the shape of MOSSA Group Groove.

MOSSA UK’s head of programming, Lynne Briggs, said: “The staff and members really entered into the spirit of the day and were open and receptive to the new challenges offered to them. I feel we really delivered on the vision of National Fitness Day. Whether participants were aged six or 60, it didn’t matter; we were all getting active together. What a brilliant day at the office!”
