UFC plans fitness industry "shake up"

The popularity of Ultimate Fighting Championship is being translated into a unique fitness experience, with the opening of a second UFC gym chain this summer and plans for global domination, including in the UK.

Boxing, Karate and tae kwon do are not the only sports wanting a piece of the fitness pie. Inspired by the most popular mixed martial art event, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the first UFC Gym opened in California in November last year, with a second planned to open there in June.

The gyms are being styled as the ultimate fitness centre with the addition of MMA training such as Muay Thai kickboxing and jiu jitsu alongside group exercise and kids’ programming.

Speaking exclusively to FitPro, UFC Gym’s senior vice president Adam Sedlack said, “People are tired of traditional fitness clubs. They want something different. UFC athletes are the best conditioned people in the world. They are functionally fit, nutritionally sound and mentally tough. Once mastered, those three areas allow people to excel in their fitness conditioning.”

After UFC president Dana White told of his plans to “shake up” the industry, Sedlack added, “We have already seen the shake up. This is not your parents’ health club of old where you go in and push a few pounds. This gym is about the experience of great training, mixed martial arts, high energy and an atmosphere that makes you want to come back for more.”
